Prof Markus Schlaich is Dobney Chair in Clinical Research and Winthrop Professor at the University of Western Australia, School of Medicine and Pharmacology and Royal Perth Hospital, while also serving as Professor of Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne and President of Hypertension Australia. Holding credentials from Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg including both German and European medical board certifications in internal medicine, nephrology, and clinical hypertension, Prof Schlaich brings 25+ years of distinguished clinical research experience spanning hypertension, nephrology, endothelial function, and cardiovascular disease. A former NHMRC Senior Research Fellow, Prof Schlaich pioneered catheter-based renal sympathetic denervation and has led groundbreaking research on obesity-related hypertension, immune mechanisms in hypertension, and gut microbiome interactions. His scholarly impact is substantial, with 545 publications, an h-index of 106, and over 74,000 citations including 16 papers cited over 500 times. Prof Schlaich holds fellowships from the American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology, serves on the Executive Committee of the International Society of Hypertension, directs multiple hypertension research centres, maintains extensive editorial board memberships for leading journals including Hypertension and the Journal of Hypertension, and serves as a reviewer for major journals such as Lancet, Circulation, and the European Heart Journal. His distinction is further recognized through prestigious awards including the 2024 Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award and 2024 WACRA Lifetime Achievement Award.
